The Story Behind Blue Öyster Cult’s Cultösaurus Erectus

In 1980, Blue Öyster Cult unleashed one of their heaviest and most underrated albums — Cultösaurus Erectus. In this video, I take a deep dive into the making of this hard rock monster.

We’ll explore how BÖC returned to their heavier roots after the more polished sound of Mirrors, and how legendary producer Martin Birch (known for his work with Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath) brought a raw, powerful edge to their sound. From the sci-fi horror lyrics of “Monsters” to the epic “Black Blade” (co-written with author Michael Moorcock), this album is packed with strange tales, killer riffs, and some of the band’s best deep cuts.

I’ll also talk about the Long Island connection, the album artwork, the unique recording process, and how this record bridges the gap between BÖC’s early occult rock days and their more commercial 80s sound.

If you’re a fan of Blue Öyster Cult or just love weird, heavy rock from the golden era. This one’s for you.
