Throughout his entire career, Marilyn Manson’s been no stranger to public protest, outcries from politicians, and threats of show cancellations over his music. Yet a recent push by opponents in the U.K. citing long-running and extremely disturbing sexual misconduct allegations might prove to be too much, as the first stop on his upcoming tour has been axed over the outcry.
Earlier this month, we reported on the fact that the U.K. leg of Marilyn Manson‘s ‘One Assassination Under God’ tour had received some push back by women’s rights advocacy groups and Green Party Member of Parliament Siân Berry. In their opposition to the show planned for the Brighton Centre on Wednesday, October 29, opponents urged the venue and its owner, Brighton and Hove city council, to put the kibosh on the show.
In a letter from Berry that according to The Guardian was co-signed by “a host of groups and the University of Sussex students’ union,” the MP suggested that Manson (real name — Brian Hugh Warner) and his upcoming performance flew in the face of the municipality’s “well-renowned values.”
“We also believe there are clear safeguarding risks to attendees and more broadly by allowing this concert to go ahead. We are deeply concerned that this show has an age restriction that means children as young as 14 can attend.
“Warner has been accused of multiple allegations of sexual assault, grooming and domestic violence. It is the case that prosecutors in the USA have determined these accusations fall outside of the statute of limitations, but this does not preclude any conclusions being drawn about risks.
“We also recognise the courage of the women who came forward to make reports and share their experiences. It is important to note that in the United States, as is also the case in the UK, the vast majority of perpetrators of sexual violence will not be prosecuted.”
Of course, we’re all well aware at this point of the numerous allegations leveled against Manson regarding various alleged sexual misconduct acts allegedly done against a number of women, including Game of Thrones actress Esmé Bianco and Manson’s former fiancée Evan Rachel Wood. Though many of the cases against Manson were either dismissed, dropped, or settled out of court, some lawsuits remain.
Naturally, Manson’s fans are pissed about this. Though that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Despite that fan anger, it looks like Mason’s U.K. run will actually start on October 31 at Windsor Hall in Bournemouth, though there have also been calls to have that show cancelled as well. We’ll let you know if the situation changes at all.
