Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg Jr. on April 21, 1947, in Muskegon, Michigan, is an iconic American singer, songwriter, and actor, widely regarded as the “Godfather of Punk.” He gained prominence as the frontman of the proto-punk band The Stooges, formed in 1967, known for their raw sound and Iggy’s wild, often confrontational stage presence, which included antics like stage diving and performing shirtless.
After The Stooges initially disbanded in the mid-1970s, Iggy embarked on a solo career, collaborating closely with David Bowie. Together, they produced influential albums such as The Idiot and Lust for Life in 1977, which helped shape the post-punk and new wave movements.
Throughout his career, Iggy Pop has been celebrated for his distinctive voice and poetic lyrics. His solo hits include “The Passenger” and “Candy,” the latter being his highest-charting single in the U.S. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Stooges in 2010 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
Iggy continues to create and perform music; his 2023 album Every Loser received positive reviews and featured collaborations with artists like Duff McKagan and Chad Smith. Beyond music, he has acted in films such as Cry-Baby and Coffee and Cigarettes, and he hosts a radio show on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Known for his resilience and adaptability, Iggy Pop remains a vital figure in rock music, continually influencing new generations of artists.
