I quit alcohol 2 years ago and my life has improved in many ways. I am often asked, how do you cope or why do I go to certain events such as parties if I don’t drink. I figured I’d explain it all in a song!
When I was in my 20s, I was an avid craft beer drinker. I went to hundreds of breweries and always looked to try new beers whenever I could, even ordering rare beers online. I became obsessed with the scene and started investigating what it takes to brew and start my own brewery! So how can someone so obsessed like me, quit it all later on?
My mind started changing about alcohol when I realized it was slowing me down in my work career, music career and my relationships with people. Whenever I would drink, I’d be lucky to be at 50% capacity the next day. When I was younger, I could brush those hangovers off and just push through, but as I got older it became harder and harder every day. It got to a point even if I had one drink the night before, the next day would be a struggle. It’s hard to execute complex engineering designs or write a song when you feel like crap!
Socially, it’s very difficult to walk away from alcohol. A lot of the things I do are associated: playing music in bars, going to festivals, attending sporting events, going to parties and many more. I had to learn how to be the one person in the room that wasn’t drinking.
What made that easy is when I realized, alcohol never made any activity more fun, it distracted from the activity itself. I learned if I needed alcohol to be “having fun” then I should find something else to do in general! I honestly can say that every day of my life now is action-packed and I am never bored.
I wanted to document all the fun things I do in a music video to celebrate me being free from alcohol. I present to you a dance rock song inspired by rock music in the 60s “Dancing Free”.
