Gillan – Sleeping on the Job: A 7-Inch Vinyl Single from Glory Road
Ian Gillan – Bernie Torme – John McCoy – Colin Towns – Mick Underwood
In this edition of my occasional singles spotlight, I’m revisiting a 7-inch vinyl record that meant a lot to me in my younger days — “Sleeping on the Job” by Gillan, taken from their classic Glory Road album.
Back in 1980, I played this single over and over again — and it still brings back a flood of memories. For those who don’t know, Sleeping on the Job was already part of the band’s live set around 1979, during the Mr. Universe era, before its official release. The song really captured that Deep Purple-esque sound that fans (like myself) adored, with Colin Towns’ keyboards giving the track a wonderfully John Lord-style solo and texture.
