Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band Honors 30 Years of Ledbetter Heights at Brown County Music Center

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band rolled into the Brown County Music Center in Nashville, Indiana, on April 22 and turned the venue into a blues-rock haven. Shepherd’s guitar sang with the same fire that first caught the world’s attention three decades ago, while the tight rhythm section and soulful vocals kept the energy high from the first note to the last.

The night celebrated the 30th-anniversary tour supporting the re-recording of his breakthrough album, and the performance showed why this music still resonates so strongly with longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd exploded onto the scene as a teenager in 1995. The Shreveport, Louisiana native was just 16 when he released his debut album, Ledbetter Heights. Named after a historic neighborhood tied to blues legend Lead Belly, the record quickly earned platinum status, topped Billboard’s blues chart for 10 weeks, and introduced Shepherd’s blistering yet melodic guitar style to a wide audience. Even during the peak of the grunge era, his sound stood out. Guitar World later named him the No. 3 blues guitarist in the world, placing him alongside icons like B.B. King and Eric Clapton.

Since then, Shepherd has built an impressive career filled with six Grammy nominations, multiple gold and platinum albums, and tours alongside legends such as Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Van Halen. His follow-up record Trouble Is… dominated both rock and blues charts. He has also enjoyed successful side projects, including The Rides with Stephen Stills and recent work with Bobby Rush. Yet Ledbetter Heights remains the album that started it all. On May 8—just two weeks after this Indiana show—the 30th-anniversary re-recording arrives, produced with Jerry Harrison and featuring Shepherd playing through his original 1995 gear to capture both the spirit of the original and the wisdom of three decades on the road.

A special treat for fans was hearing longtime singer Noah Hunt deliver the Ledbetter Heights material live for the first time on this tour. Hunt has handled lead vocals on every Shepherd studio album since 1997, yet he was not part of the original 1995 sessions. This tour finally gave audiences the chance to experience those early songs with the band’s current powerhouse lineup.

Setlist

The band performed the complete Ledbetter Heights album straight through, breathing new life into every track. They followed with several strong cuts from the Dirt on My Diamonds volumes. The setlist highlights from the evening included, after the Ledbetter Heights album material:

  • I Got a Woman
  • Watch You Go
  • Talk To Me Baby
  • I Found Love (When I Found You)
  • Blue on Black
  • Turn to Stone (Joe Walsh cover)

Throughout the show, Shepherd moved effortlessly between explosive solos and thoughtful, singing lines. Noah’s voice brought fresh emotion to the early material, while Stevie Ray Vaughn’s former drummer, “Whipper” Layton’s laid down steady backbeats, and the rhythm section kept the groove locked in tight. The horns lifted several numbers with extra swing and color, especially on the newer tracks. Who doesn’t love horns?

Long before the end of the night, the crowd was on its feet, clearly moved by a performance that felt both nostalgic and fully alive in the present.

This stop on the 30th-anniversary tour proved once again that the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band knows exactly how to honor its roots while keeping the music exciting and relevant. Anyone who enjoys honest, heartfelt blues-rock would find plenty to love at one of their shows. They’re always good, but this one was exceptional. The combination of technical skill, genuine passion, and a set that spans three decades makes for an evening that stays with you long after the last note fades.
