Boogie Back to the District: Brassroots Lights Up LA with “Aim High” and Catch One Run

The Strip has seen its share of scene-shifters over the last few years – from feathered troubadours at the Troubadour to glitter kids on the Whisky stage – but right now, the hottest groove in town isn’t coming from Laurel Canyon or Topanga. It’s radiating straight outta Koreatown, courtesy of the unstoppable Brassroots District.

With the release of “Aim High” this week, the District is reminding Angelenos (and anyone still snoozing on them) that funk is alive, well, and unapologetically homegrown. It’s a jam that doesn’t tiptoe into your speakers – it busts down the door, grabs your hips, and leads you into the nearest circle of sweat-soaked dancers.

Built on a foundation of horn stabs, righteous rhythm, and that signature co-lead magic from Ursa Major and Copper Jones, “Aim High” is a mission statement. And for those who were lucky enough to catch the band’s rooftop guerrilla set on Fairfax last summer (guilty), you already know these cats are writing their own rules.

That rebellious spirit is all over this rollout. After flipping a major label deal the bird (and in public, no less – still legendary), the band partnered with Gil Williams – Ursa’s brother and newly minted label boss of For The People Records – for a DIY record that’s looking to shake LA out of its disco-lite stupor.

And now, the coup de grâce: an eight-night residency at Jewel’s Catch One starting next month. The club, already known for its genre-crossing dancefloor democracy, is the perfect match for a band hellbent on tearing down boundaries – musical, racial, and otherwise. The vibe? Think Parliament at a Black Panthers meeting hosted by Pam Grier, with a splash of starlight.

So whether you’re rolling up in a shag-carpeted van or sneaking in through the kitchen door, get there. Don’t just hear about the District. Be in it.

After all, this is 1974. And the revolution’s got a rhythm.
