Houk was a Polish band active from 1988 to 2003, known for their music that blended elements of hard rock, grunge, reggae, and hardcore punk.
Initially named Houk Howgh, the band formed in 1988 from the remnants of the group Deuter. Its lineup included members from various bands like Deuter, Kultura, Izrael, Armia, and Moskwa: guitarist Robert Sadowski, later of progressive metal band Kobong, Tadeusz Kaczorowski, Piotr “Fala” Falkowski, and vocalist Zbigniew Bieniak from Oddział Zamknięty. In the fall of 1989, Bieniak left, and Dariusz Malejonek took over as vocalist. Houk quickly became known for their numerous performances in Poland, such as in Warsaw pubs, and abroad, like on the streets of West Berlin. Their 1990 performance at the Jarocin Festival was particularly notable. Malejonek clarified that the band’s name, Houk, did not relate to the English word “Hawk,” though he later admitted that the name had some Native American connotations.
Their debut album, “Soul Ammunition,” recorded in just four days at Robert Brylewski’s Złota Skała studio, was released in 1992 and declared Debut of the Year by “Tylko Rock” magazine. In 1993, Houk performed at the Midem ’93 music trade fair in Cannes, a prize for winning a contest organized by Radio France Internationale, an event that was broadcast by MTV.
The band’s next release, the live album “Natural Way (Full Noize)” in 1993, featured a recording from a concert in Warsaw, including covers of Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop, and T. Rex songs. In February 1993, Houk was invited by Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki for the world premiere of “The Last Border,” which featured “Soul Ammunition II” as the title track. Following the premiere, Houk embarked on a short tour in Finland. The music video for “Transmission Into Your Heart” included clips from “The Last Border.”
After Robert Sadowski left the band in December 1993, Artur Affek replaced him. In August 1994, Malejonek decided to dissolve the lineup and collaborate with members of Ahimsa, including Paweł Krawczyk (“Gruby”), Mirosław Grewiński (“Miro”), Tomek Sierajewski (“Bolek”), and Tomasz Grewiński (“Tomik”).
Houk, a leading band in the Polish alternative and grunge scene, opened for several international stars, including New Model Army, Bad Brains, and Clawfinger. The 1995 release “Generation X,” featuring the single “Pieniądz” and music videos for “Wstań,” “Woman,” and “Żyję w tym mieście,” was nominated for a Fryderyk award in the Rock Album category.
In the late ’90s, Malejonek pursued solo projects, including Maleo Reggae Rockers. The Grewiński brothers left the band, and Houk’s lineup saw further changes, eventually including Sławomir Klugman and Maciej “Ślimak” Starosta. Their last studio album, “Extra Pan,” released on August 26, 2000, addressed themes like genetic experimentation and cloning.
After more lineup changes in May 2003, Houk suspended their concert activities. On July 28, 2004, reissues of all their albums except “Extra Pan” were released, each featuring additional audio and video materials.
By the end of 2004, Malejonek indicated that a new Houk album was unlikely in the near future, although there were plans to contribute a song to a documentary about the alternative scene of the late ’80s and early ’90s. However, this project was canceled due to Sadowski’s health issues, and he unexpectedly passed away on January 25, 2005.

Lyrics:
I was sleeping for long long time
Now I know my eyes were blind
Yes it was so long long sleep
And that sleep was much too deep
You’re surrounded
Like a sheep by wolves
Standed alone face to face with the foes
Never stop
Never looking back
It was ambush in the night
Pain will pass away
Sorrow will never stay
Peace and love remain
And we’ll meet again
He was called – Nazareene
Came one day on the planet Earth
To break – our chains
To save – our souls
To set us set us free
Pain will pass …
